Dr. Diana Coffey Consultant Psychiatrist MRCPsych
Experienced psychiatrist for private appointments
Before my psychiatric training, I worked as a GP and emergency doctor. As a result, I maintained my interest in general medicine. There are always some new developments regarding diagnosis and treatment of various medical conditions. My clinical experience showed that physical and mental health problems were often linked. Because of this link, it is not possible to treat one problem without addressing the other.
About my training
My initial psychiatric training took place at UMDS/ South Thames regional training scheme in psychiatry at Guy’s and St Thomas College, London. Most of my training placements were in Sussex and London. I completed my higher specialist training in forensic psychiatry on North East Thames training scheme. This was mainly in London but also in Essex. During my psychiatric training, I gained experience in all areas of psychiatry. This included General Adult psychiatry (both inpatient and outpatient settings), Rehabilitation, Child psychiatry, Learning disability, Old Age, Liaison psychiatry and Forensic Psychiatry.
About my qualifications
I am on the GMC specialist register in psychiatry and Approved clinicians list. I am also approved under section 12(2) as having special experience in the diagnosis or treatment of mental disorder.
About my experience
I have experience in all areas of psychiatry, with additional experience and training in psychotherapy. As a result, my clinical practice combines clinical skills of a doctor with psychotherapeutic approach. Therefore, every patient receives a very individual approach based on his/her needs. I am an optimist and believe that with the right treatment, everyone has the potential to improve. During my career, I have worked within the NHS and private mental health care. Following the completion of my specialist training, I worked in a forensic field but decided to return to general adult and old age psychiatry where I have worked for the past seven years.
Who do I treat
I assess and treat adult patients with depression, bipolar affective disorder, psychosis, bereavement, stress, personality issues, post-traumatic stress disorder, mild cognitive disorder, dementia, menopausal mood changes and other conditions.
